Doris Included in Ireland Squad While McCarthy Left Out

Ireland rugby squad announcement news

Returning head coach the Ireland coach has included captain Caelan Doris in his Irish team for the fall Tests, but Joe McCarthy misses out.

Doris, absent from play since having shoulder surgery in the start of May, recently returned to Leinster training, with doubts lingering whether he will be ready to play against the All Blacks in Chicago on 1 November.

Second row McCarthy, on the other hand, was not considered after failing to recover from the foot issue suffered during the opening British and Irish Lions match against the Wallabies in July.

Northern province forward Izuchukwu and southern province winger Calvin Nash are also absent due to fitness concerns, while number 15 Keenan had already been ruled out after having hip surgery following the Lions tour.

Leinster forward Paddy McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the sole uncapped member in the 34-player group, however Irish rugby authorities states uncapped provincial duo Edwin Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and previously capped western province wing Shayne Bolton will head to Chicago as "cover".

Following facing the All Blacks at the Chicago stadium in a repeat of their 2016 encounter, the team will play Japan, Australia and world champions the Springboks in Dublin.

"There's an exciting look to the panel and it's a chance for the more experienced members and for the newcomers on the summer tour to the Lelos and the Lobos," commented Farrell, who returns to national team duties after a break to lead the British and Irish Lions to Australia.

In a largely experienced squad, the Dublin club's Prendergast and Munster's Jack Crowley will once again vie for the first-choice fly-half spot. The fly-half role is still available, with the two players set to play against each other for the first time in the upcoming United Rugby Championship match at Croke Park.

Frawley is the third number 10 chosen with Farrell opting against calling up the province's Byrne.

At number 9, the Ireland boss has picked Lions tourist Jamison Gibson-Park and Casey, who led Ireland to the summer Test wins over Georgia and Portugal. Additionally, there is a recall for the western province's Caolin Blade, chosen to teammate Murphy.

Robbie Henshaw, Aki, Garry Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey represent an experienced group of centre options. Osborne is another option in the midfield, though the 23-year-old is also a frontrunner to deputise for Keenan at full-back.

Wingers Lowe, Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Stockdale are included. The winger shone on his national team debut over the summer with a brace each in the victories over Georgia and Portugal.

McCarthy is the sole fresh addition in the Irish forwards. The front rower has been in two of Leinster's URC United Rugby Championship matches this season and played in the second string's loss by the English in Bristol earlier this year.

McCarthy was selected in interim boss O'Connell's summer selection, yet did not earn a cap.

Munster lock Thomas Ahern, who earned his debut appearances in those matches, is kept in the squad, and experienced Northern province lock Henderson is back after sitting out the summer matches.

Conan, who played in all three Lions matches during the tour, is poised to deputise for the captain should the captain fails to recover fitness soon enough to play New Zealand.

The Ireland squad will assemble in the capital on the start of the week before traveling to the US on Tuesday.
